Not all language assessment tools were created equal.
For human resources- particularly recruitment and training, a reliable, convenient language assessment tool is necessary to make informed decisions and program plans for career development.
There are a number of language assessment tools available in the market. Now how do you pick one that's right for you? You have to consider the following.
1. Reliability
Obviously, this is the most important. You need to check if the tool you chose is legit and follows The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Otherwise, results won't be valid at best and iffy at worst.
2. Convenience
The point of getting an automated tool is to make your job easier. Having to sit around and wait for appointments wastes time and resources; and impacts operational efficiency. If you can integrate the tool to other programs you are using for work, that would great.
3. Coverage
What I noticed with some of the assessment tools in the market is that they just cover superficial aspects of language like pronunciation, copying, and answering simple questions.
A lot don't have anything to rate a person's written language ability. That or you have to pay extra for other tests on top of the basic assessment for spoken language. Language proficiency encompasses four domains; listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
If you are not measuring one domain in favor of another area that you think is more important, is your assessment even valid?
4. Fraud-Proof
If your assessment can be faked or be circumvented by copying and pasting written work from another site, it's pointless. It's important to get a tool that detects and deters cheating- identity verification is definitely a must.
5. Convenient
An inaccessible tool is a pointless tool. In this day and age, people prefer to take tests and complete the recruitment process at home- without the need to rush to a site that may or may not be far from one's home. User-experience is a major factor for tools and convenience is one of the biggest factors to consider.

When choosing a tool, make sure that you are getting what you are paying for. You can't be paying too much for something that only gives you minimum requirements. Better yet, the best tools are reasonably priced for giving you reliability, convenience, integrity of results, coverage, and a detailed report and recommendations for improvement at that.
